Santa Ana Volcano Tour

Santa Ana Volcano, the highest point in El Salvador, is a must-do experience for adventure lovers. Located in the western part of the country, near the border with Guatemala and just two hours from Playa El Tunco, this hike promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of a volcanic giant.

With an approximate duration of 3 hours (1.5 hours uphill and 1.5 hours downhill), this moderately challenging route is accessible for most hikers. Starting at 1,800 meters, you’ll ascend to 2,381 meters above sea level, gaining nearly 600 meters of elevation while reaching the skies.

To discover the secrets of the trail, having a professional local guide is essential; they’ll provide expert navigation and fascinating insights about the environment. Unlike the tropical coast, you’ll enjoy cooler temperatures and be rewarded with breathtaking 360° views of Lake Coatepeque, the iconic Izalco Volcano, and the Pacific horizon.

On average, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach the crater summit and 1.5 hours to descend back to the base. We make several stops along the way to ensure everyone enjoys the hike. If you’re in good physical condition, you can reach the summit in an hour or less!

Record: 48 minutes.

The hike is considered moderate. While manageable for most people with decent fitness, the terrain can be steep and rocky, especially near the summit. The hike is divided into three main sections:

  1. Forest: You start hiking through the Ilamatepec mountain forest. This section is very steep, so go slow, focus on your breathing, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
  2. Shrubs: The second section is mostly shrubs. You can catch your breath here, as there are some flat areas to regain your pace. You’ll also enjoy views of Izalco Volcano and Cerro Verde National Park.
  3. Rocks: The final section is mostly rocky. Take it slow, as there are no trees or shrubs for shade—remember to apply sunscreen.

The summit of Santa Ana Volcano is 2,381 meters (7,812 feet) above sea level.

Total ascent: You start at 1,800 meters and reach 2,381 meters, gaining approximately 580 meters (1,900 feet) in elevation.

Yes, hiking with a local guide is mandatory in this National Park. Hiring a guide also helps support the local economy.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction, comfortable clothing, a hat, and a windbreaker or light jacket for the summit, as it can be windy at the top.
